Fourth of July and Work/Life Balance

At the Anita Borg Institute we have the 4th of July off, like many US organizations, and I was looking forward to a 4 day weekend off, a rare treat for me (I took Monday the 7th off too). But we found out that we needed to move next week, and since I am traveling last week and next week, I spent today packing up boxes at the office.

I consistently make time for the areas of my life that are most important to me. - work, time with my husband, running, and time with friends, as well as spending time at our new house in the mountains.

But today is an example of how the best laid plans... HP, who so graciously provides us with office space, is moving a lot of people As a small non-profit in 13 of their cubicle, we are one small dot on their massive move plan, and so we have little influence over their schedule. Thus my packing today so we can move next week.

I passionately believe in taking time off regularly, but sometimes it doesn't work out. But it is important to make it a priority.
